A Very Productive Weekend

Over the weekend, I watched four different movies. The irony is I don't even like movies...I generally do not have the patience or attention span for them. But, for some reason, this past weekend, all I wanted to do was watch them (probably out of procrastination). Usually, I am the girl watching reality TV and romantic comedies. But this past weekend, I watched Lady Bird, Black Panther, Blade Runner, and Blade Runner 2049.

For those of you who do not know, Lady Bird is about a teenage girl's senior year of high school. With a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, I've been excited about this movie for a while. This movie was not your typical story of a high school girl's life. Rather, it explores her complicated relationship with her mother, her hometown, and her future. I think I felt especially connected to this film due to the fact that the protagonist ends up at NYU, where I attended my freshman year. She tells her mother, "I want to go to the East Coast. I want to go where culture is like New York". This is a sentiment I know all too well. Ultimately I have learned that you can find culture in whatever city you're in, but I found this statement hilarious and incredibly relatable.

I have been really into Marvel movies recently, so I was very excited to see the much anticipated Black Panther. I read in Forbes the other day that Black Panther has topped the lifetime gross of Marvel, DC, and the X-Men Movies, which is insane! The movie is about a new king of an isolated, technologically advanced nation in Africa, who is challenged for his throne by an outsider. This movie not only was an amazing message, but it also had a lot of heart. I generally enjoyed the entire 2 hour and 15 minute, except for the 30 minute fight scene at the end that dragged on for ages!

Lastly, I watched both Blade Runner movies back to back. For those of you who have not seen the first Blade Runner movie, it is so weird. It is basically about a dystopian future where a blade runner must find and kill replicants, human-like robots. I can't even say if I enjoyed it or not because it was just so odd. The second movie, Blade Runner 2049, is the same idea but set 30 years later. I highly suggest watching both films back to back, if you have a spare 5 hours. It is interesting to compare and contrast each one. My only complaint was the second movie was 2 hours and 44 minutes! I am genuinely impressed with myself.

  1. I really like Lady Bird too!!! The magnificance of this movie is that it depict the growth of tennager so realistically, for example, the conflicts between lady bird and her mom, her dream to get away from that little town. I believe many people will resonate to this movie more or less.

  2. I also saw Black Panther last weekend and agree it was very good. The other three I have not seen but will probably look into since you've given them good reviews.

  4. That's a lot of movies for one weekend! Haha that sounds amazing. I heard incredible reviews about Black Panther, and I've seen their advertisements everywhere! I've actually never seen any of your listed movies, but I just added them to my "movies I want to watch" bucket list- so thank you for that.

  6. I definitely understand and agree with what you said about New York! I'm not a big movie person for the most part, but will try to see Black Panther soon too.

  7. Hi Elizabeth. I am not one who watches tv, so I din't watch any of these movie. Like you said, I don't have the patience either to sit on a couch for hours. Anyway your description of them made me interested and I think I'll watch at least one of them.

  8. Hi Elizabeth. I have always felt the same way about New York. I was heavily debating of attending NYU or USC. I felt that USC offered more for me because of my major. How was your experience in NYU, did you like it more than USC? I cant believe you do not like watching movies. I love movies and cinematography I find its an outlet to escape the real world.
